Midsummer

Just a little trip about the garden at the very end of June ..

strawberries ripening in jam jars to protect them from our birdy friends,

valerian towering high above the fence and everything else,

feverfew in full flower now

and lavender just starting to pop.

Just been looking up 'cuckoo spit' .. you can see some on the lavender in the photo above, but we also have a little on the elder. Will have to look out for the adult froghoppers.. I like learning something new, and I like to have an answer ready when the little'un asks me something!

There's so much doing at this time of year and its such a joy to be out in the fresh air working with the plants and enjoying the sunshine. You can really 'feel' the wheel of the year turning over Midsummer as all the burgeoning and freshness and growing gives way to fullness, culmination, maturity. It happens imperceptibly and overnight, it seems and suddenly its time to be harvesting.

Great idea with the jam jars - I'm going to try that as something is eating mine - probably the same thing thats eating my courgettes before they even get started.

Hi Jo-Ann,

Thanks - we actually saw one of our blackbirds brazenly sitting on the edge of the pot, tucking into our very first ripening strawberry of the year, lol! One of ours also got holes in from woodlice munching, so we left in situ for them to have when we put the rest inside jars. Have found arranging the jars horizontally works best, otherwise the water they collect when it rains can be a problem.

Hi MadHat, good to see you :-)

I never thought about using jars on strawberries. Not a bad idea... Maybe I'll have a use for all the jars I keep for no reason. lol

We use netting that is held up by bamboo stakes about 1' over the tops of the strawberry plants. This kept the birds away but didn't do anything to keep the bugs out.
