Strong cup of sage tea with a dollop of honey stirred in for a sore throat - gargle with each mouthful before you swallow.
Lemon Thyme tea with dollop of honey stirred in for nose, throat and chestiness - this one was better made in a pot and allowed to brew for a good 10minutes.
Steam inhalation for congestion - washing up bowl, hot water and a few drops of Rosemary, Eucalyptus, Peppermint essential oils - towel over your head and inhale!
A few drops of the same oils in a table spoon of carrier oil (I used sweet almond but sunflower oil would do) as a chest rub and in the bath for when you start coughing and/or it goes to your chest.
For mornings when your cold is so bad you think you will never be able to get going: lemon juice and several slices of root ginger in hot water, strong as you can take it with a nice dollop of honey mixed in. I peeled and crushed some of the ginger to get the juice. You can feel this warm you up all the way down to your toes - and its great when you can't taste anything anymore, because you will definitely taste this.
And as soon as you feel the slightest suspicion of a cold coming, take a garlic capsule every day I'm sure this lessens the impact and gets rid of it faster. I also tried a Nigel Slater thing - roasted a whole head of garlic, then popped the flesh out of each clove and spread the puree onto toast. It was absolutely delicious and I sure being in the warm kitchen smelling the roasting garlic in the oven didn't do me any harm either.
Hope this helps someone else out there feeling poorly and miserable!!Please contribute any tried and tested cold and flu remedies that you set store by?

You are a girl after my own heart hedgewitch.....I have tried many of your potions.....new to me is the bulb of garlic roasted...that sounds yum and will now go on my list.
My little granddaughter Poppi eats thyme straight from the plant. She has a weak chest and chose the plant to help her.....I think we have another hedgewitch in the making.
Get better soon..
I usually mix honey and a bit of butter in a cup of hot milk. It's tasty and helps fight cold too.
Get well soon!
I just found your blog, and you are a woman after my own heart. I use essential oils when I am sick and our fav is 3 drops each of lavender, peppermint and eucalyptus in a steamy bath, then make a rub for your chest and back in almond oil or olive oil. It seems to speed up the process of getting better. Catnip tea will also help. It doesn't taste very good but it burns the illness right out of you.
Feel better soon!

fabulous remedies so i hope you are feeling much better. i like hot water with fresh lemon, ginger, and honey. thyme and peppermint or spearmint tea work wonders. we also use the steam bath but usually put chamomile into the boiling water. chew on fresh feverfew leaves for headache. i have also found using a neti pot to irrigate and cleanse sinuses with salt water works like magic. best of health & blessings! sue
Hi, Came to visit via Elspeth Thompson's blog. I'm going to make a salve with some Eucalyptus I soaked in almond oil and am going to try that out the next time I get a cold. Maybe I'll add a bit of Rosemary and Peppermint essential oil when I make it.
Many thanks for all your contributions and well wishes!
